DV8 Training’s Fusion Hosts Debate Regarding the UK Riots and the Impact

Teaching at DV8 Training always brings with it an element of adventure. So it came as no great surprise when I was recently asked to host a seminar exploring the impact of the UK riots, as part of a project involving the British Council and the Transatlantic Network 2020. It wasn’t long before an international list of delegates from Mexico, America, Poland, Germany, Spain and Portugal confirmed their attendance.

I have to say that I really enjoyed hosting the debate, last Friday. The evening brought together many different nationalities, beliefs, cultures and professionals, and served as a timely reminder that traditional assembly has a real place in today’s technology-driven society.

There is no denying that we are living in testing times. The aftermath of the England riots brings to mind an old African proverb:

“When the youth are not initiated into the village they will burn it down just to feel the heat.”

In many ways I feel we need to go beyond initiation; we need to empower our future leaders to face new challenges. The work of the Transatlantic Network 2020 and the insightful contribution from the DV8 students offers some hope that we are on our way to achieving this goal.
